It’s the 4th of July, the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States of America, and a holiday. We’re going to barbeque, which I realize is a radical and innovative and unique way to spend this particular day. The only downside is the smoke in the air. When I went out to my car this morning, ash was falling all around me. It’s . . . not fun. But what can you do? The world may be in flames around us; all we can do is try to put some out, whether literal or metaphorical. And it never hurts to solve a Wordle while you’re at it.

How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Bot Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
CRATE was super unlucky today. 187 words left — and we all know that 187 is the California penal code for murder! — and just one green “A.” SOUND was also unlucky, leaving me with 37 words. Fortunately, AMPLY slashed that down to just one. All I had left was PIZZA. I like it when I’m left with pizza.
Competitive Wordle Score
The Wordle Bot and I tie with four tries today and we each walk away with 0 points. It’s going to be tough to catch the dang Bot!
Erik: -4 points
Wordle Bot: 6 points
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
“Pizza” comes from Italian pizza, first recorded around the 10th century. Its ultimate origin is uncertain, but it may derive from a Lombardic (Germanic) word such as bizzo or pizzo, meaning “bite” or “mouthful.” The word originally referred to a flatbread before becoming associated with the topped dish from Naples.
