Much more is expected of the Toronto Blue Jays than what they have delivered so far this season.
The Blue Jays are competing with the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox to stay out of the American League East basement.
Much of the Blue Jays woes can be traced to inconsistent starting pitching.
In particular, they have to get Shane Bieber and Kevin Gausman back on track. Currently, they are running off the rails.
On paper, Toronto boasts a quartet of starters with very credible pitching track records.
fangraphs.com lists their current four starters to be:
Dylan Cease-RHP-Age 30
Shane Bieber-RHP-Age 31
Trey Yasavage-RHP-Age 22
Kevin Gausman-RHP-Age 35
When a 5th starter is needed, right-hander Spencer Miles is used as an opener. He may be followed in the game by veteran lefty, Patrick Corbin.
Issues With The Toronto Blue Jays Rotation Starters:
Toronto Blue Jays Dylan Cease:
The Blue Jays need more pitchers like Dylan Cease.
Dylan Cease has always been able to dominate hitters with a blazing 97 miles per hour four-seam fastball, and biting slider combination. He also throws a sinking fastball, and a changeup.
This year, Cease is striking out an average of 13.6 hitters per nine innings, a career high. However, he is also walking an average of 4.1 hitters, and yielding 6.6 hits per game.
On July 3, Cease defeated the Seattle Mariners, when he threw a three hit shutout. He walked only one.
The start before his gem against the Mariners, Cease lost to the Texas Rangers, when he went only 4.2 innings, and yielded 4 earned runs, on 4 hits and 5 walks.
The Blue Jays need the Cease that dominated the Mariners. But Dylan Cease really isn’t a problem pitcher for the Blue Jays.
Cease pitched on July 8, against the San Francisco Giants. He took a no-hitter into the 9th inning, yielded a hit, and won 10-0. He struck out 11.
Cease is not a problem. Not at all.
The next two pitchers are really struggling. To this old scout, they form the crux of the Blue Jays starting pitching woes.
Toronto Blue Jays Shane Bieber:
After recovering from injury that sidelined him for most of the first half this year, Bieber returned to the Blue Jays rotation June 23, 2026
Bieber went 3.2 innings, as the team was easing him back. He yielded 9 hits, 4 earned runs, walked none, and struck out 2 against the Houston Astros. He yielded 3 home runs. It was not a good beginning to his season. He got no decision.
In his second start, June 28, 2026, Bieber went 5.1 innings against the Texas Rangers. He yielded 5 hits, 2 earned runs, walked 4, struck out 4, and gave up a home run. He got no decision.
That’s 4 home runs in two starts, covering 9 innings.
In his third start, July 4, 2026, Bieber went 4 innings, yielded six hits, and 7 earned runs. He walked 3, and struck out 3. He yielded another 2 home runs. He took the loss.
That’s 6 home runs in 13 innings pitched. That is not sustainable.
Bieber ’s ineffectiveness is an issue for the Blue Jays.
After a rough start to his last outing, ausportsyahoo.com reported Bieber said, “We can definitely be a little more sharp from the get go.”
Toronto Blue Jays Kevin Gausman:
Kevin Gausman has made 19 starts for the Blue Jays this season. He is pitching to a 4.32 ERA, and 1.22 WHIP. Both those statistics are far above his norm.
Here are Gausman’s last four starts:
June 19 vs Chicago Cubs= 2 innings, 7 hits, 7 earned runs, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1 home run. He took the loss.
June 25 vs Texas Rangers= 6 innings, 10 hits, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 3 home runs. He took the loss.
June 30 vs New York Mets= 6 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts, 1 home run. He took the loss.
July 6 vs San Francisco Giants= 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 4 earned runs (7 total runs) 5 walks, 8 strikeouts, 0 home runs. He took the loss.
Clearly, this is not the Kevin Gausman the Blue Jays desperately need.
Toronto Blue Jays Trey Yasavage:
Trey Yasavage has made 13 Blue Jays starts, and has been very credible.
He has pitched to a 4-4 record, with a 3.31 ERA, and 1.07 WHIP.
Yasavage has yielded 3.9 walks per nine, and 5.8 hits per nine innings. He has struck out an average of 8.3 hitters per nine innings.
Yasavage has yielded 7 home runs in 73.1 innings.
Basically, the Blue Jays have three pitching issues to resolve:
1- They have to find a 5th starter, unless they can return Max Scherzer from his back spasms.
2- Shane Bieber must give the team more length, and better performance in his starts. He was an All Star, and a Cy Young Award winner.
3- Kevin Gausman has to return to the form that made him a two-time All Star.
With players like Kazuma Okamoto, and Vlad Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays have firepower. But their pitching has to come through.
The Toronto Blue Jays have to get much improved, and more consistent pitching from starters Shane Bieber, and Kevin Gausman. Both have to get back on track.
