Despite still going strong in cinemas as the school summer holidays roll on, building on a global box office take that’s already cruised past $1 billion, Toy Story 5 already has designs on taking the home cinema world by storm too – on physical media as well as streaming services.
In fact, Disney has announced that Toy Story 5 fans can look forward to the film appearing on today’s most premium physical media format, with a 4K Blu-ray release scheduled to hit stores on September 22. Just over a month after the film’s August 18 debut on digital streaming platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
As has become common practice for Disney in the US, the only Toy Story 5 4K Blu-ray option will be a limited edition 4K SteelBook – so if you’re keen on getting one, I’d recommend getting your order in soon.
The 4K Blu-ray production will carry the film mastered in 4K resolution (the film was granted a 4K digital intermediate for its cinematic release) in the premium Dolby Vision HDR format. This will drop down to standard HDR10 for TVs or 4K Blu-ray players that don’t support Dolby Vision. The 4K HDR visuals will be accompanied by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
The HD Blu-ray edition, by comparison, will get a 7.1-channel DTS-HDMA mix, as well as, of course, only carrying SDR HD rather than HDR 4K visuals.
The film will be presented in its theatrical 1.85:1 aspect ratio and, very surprisingly for a Disney release, according to the details released to the media (which I have double checked with Disney twice) the film will be shipping on a 100GB 4K Blu-ray disc rather than the lower-capacity 66GB disc Disney pretty much always uses unless a film has an extremely long run time (Toy Story 5 only runs to 102 minutes). This gives the digital master more room, potentially resulting in less digital compression.
The Toy Story 5 movie will be accompanied for its 4K Blu-ray release by a solid looking set of bonus features that includes five deleted scenes (presented in various stages of unfinished animation) and even a feature-length commentary track. The full list of extra goodies is as follows:
