On Friday, SEGA announced a major new addition to its upcoming action-adventure title, Stranger Than Heaven. Deceased hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur is a character in the game, and both SEGA of America and RGG Studio want everyone to know there’s no A.I. used to bring the rapper/actor to the video game screen.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Game: Stranger Than Heaven (RGG Studio / SEGA), a distant Like a Dragon prequel
  • Reveal: Summer Game Fest 2026, June 5
  • Tupac’s role: a character named Amaru
  • Release date: January 15, 2027 — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, day one on Game Pass
  • SEGA’s stance: estate-approved, no A.I. used

Who Does Tupac Play in Stranger Than Heaven?

Tupac’s character in STH is named Amaru, which is the rapper’s given name. SEGA isn’t sharing a ton of details on Tupac’s role, but the reveal caught the world’s attention.

The name choice is pointed, as Tupac was born Tupac Amaru Shakur, and SEGA says more about the character will come later. He arrives as one of several real-world figures in a star-studded cast that includes Snoop Dogg, his son Cordell Broadus and a deep bench of Japanese actors, alongside the late Bunta Sugawara, whose likeness also appears with a living actor providing the voice.

Did Stranger Than Heaven Use A.I. for Tupac?

No.

It seems SEGA wanted to distance itself from the A.I. content that has been circulating across the globe depicting several deceased celebrities — Tupac included. There is a strong feeling that such content is distasteful considering the families of the deceased have no say in how their loved ones are depicted.

According to SEGA’s announcement, Amaru’s portrayal was made with the permission and ongoing supervision of Tupac’s estate, Amaru Entertainment, with the studio promising the “utmost respect for his legacy” and building his design from archival footage and photographs rather than any generative tools.

On stage, Snoop Dogg and Cordell Broadus, who both appear in the game, said the estate, the family and they work closely together, framing Tupac’s inclusion as a natural fit.

When Is the Stranger Than Heaven Release Date?

The release date for STH is set for January 15, 2027, which will be nearly two months after Grand Theft Auto 6. I’m not sure that’s enough space, to be honest.

For platforms, the game lands on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it arrives day one on Game Pass, with standard, deluxe and collector’s editions already up for pre-order. It also carries real weight for longtime fans as a distant prequel to the Like a Dragon franchise, the same universe that gave the studio its reputation, releasing into a crowded window right behind Grand Theft Auto 6.

Why Is Tupac’s Appearance Controversial?

Any time there is a depiction of the deceased, there are exploitation concerns. However, this is a bit different considering his estate was involved in this recreation of Tupac’s likeness. That doesn’t mean everyone will be cool with seeing the rapper recreated in a video game, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough how fans respond at scale.

The split was immediate, as a large share of social media and several critics framed the move as a kind of digital resurrection that the dead can’t consent to, and Tupac trended for the wrong reasons. SEGA’s counter is the paper trail itself, leaning on the estate’s sign-off and the no-A.I. process as proof the integration was handled carefully, which places the game squarely inside a growing debate over how titles use real artists’ likenesses.
