In my recent research regarding what individuals found made their lives meaningful, I examined four dimensions: Exploration, Connection, Creation, and Influence. One data point was especially compelling. Among the respondents, 84.1% agreed that they feel satisfied after discovering an answer even if no one else knows about it. That finding points to the value people place on discovery without recognition, praise, money, or an obvious external reward. It suggests that people still value the process of exploration, which is especially interesting at a time when technology like AI can provide answers almost instantly. As AI handles more tasks that once required considerably more human effort, that distinction could become increasingly important for leaders trying to understand what keeps people learning, creating, and engaged at work.
Discovery Appears To Carry Its Own Reward
These responses are interesting because so much of organizational life is built around external incentives. Employees receive goals, deadlines, compensation, recognition, promotions, and performance measures designed to encourage certain behaviors. Yet respondents reported wanting to know things even when nobody asked them to learn and nobody else would know they had found the answer. Research on curiosity has also shown that people seek information for reasons beyond an immediate practical payoff.
For most of human history, wanting to know something required effort. You had to ask someone, read, experiment, investigate, compare sources, make mistakes, or sit with a problem long enough to make sense of it. Generative AI can compress much of that process into seconds. That efficiency offers enormous benefits, but it also raises questions about what happens to the process of discovery.
Discovery Research Shows A Connection Between Exploration And Creation
Another interesting result was how strongly some of the dimensions were related. The strongest relationship in the study was between Exploration and Creation, followed by Creation and Influence.
People who scored higher in their desire to investigate, learn, and discover also tended to score higher in their desire to create. That raises an important question for organizations adopting AI: What happens to creation if people gradually do less exploration themselves?
AI can certainly produce a presentation, marketing plan, image, strategy draft, computer code, or dozens of possible solutions. Yet human creation often begins before the output. Someone notices something unusual, follows an unexpected question, connects unrelated information, becomes dissatisfied with an existing approach, or wonders whether there might be another way.
Exploration can provide raw material for creation. If leaders use AI primarily to eliminate exploration, they may remove some of the experiences that lead people toward ideas of their own. If they use AI to expand exploration, the technology can expose people to alternatives, contradictions, unfamiliar fields, and questions they might never have encountered independently.
Give People More Room For Discovery
More than 80% of respondents said they voluntarily research topics nobody required them to learn. That finding could be particularly important for organizations trying to encourage innovation.
Leaders sometimes talk about curiosity while structuring work so tightly that employees have little room to pursue anything outside their immediate responsibilities. AI could change that equation. If technology reduces the time required for routine information work, some of that saved time can be redirected toward exploration.
An employee could investigate an emerging customer behavior, learn about a technology outside their role, examine why a competitor made an unusual decision, or pursue a question nobody considered urgent. Some explorations will lead nowhere. Others may expose an opportunity everyone else missed.
Discovery Requires More Than Getting Information
AI is exceptionally good at providing information in a usable form. That can create the feeling that understanding occurred at the same time. Those are different experiences.
You can receive a well-organized explanation and still have difficulty explaining the issue yourself, challenging the reasoning, connecting it with something you already know, or recognizing when the answer does not fit a new situation.
Curiosity-driven exploration requires participation. You follow one source to another. You encounter conflicting evidence. You realize your original question was incomplete. You change your mind. You discover something that was not part of the assignment.
Research on curiosity has connected curious states with information seeking, learning, and memory. AI can participate in that process very effectively. The concern is what happens when receiving information begins to replace exploration rather than support it.
Protect Discovery As AI Gets Better
The findings from this study give me some optimism. Discovery itself still appears to have value. People reported enjoying finding answers, researching topics they were never assigned, asking questions beyond the basics, and learning things with no immediate practical benefit. That gives leaders something useful to work with. AI can remove unnecessary effort without removing exploration. It can answer the first question while leaving room for people to ask the next one. As AI gets better at providing answers, leaders may need to pay even more attention to preserving the human desire to keep asking questions.
