Innovation is often framed as a technology challenge. But for many IT leaders, the much trickier problem is introducing new capabilities without disrupting the business. As organizations refresh aging devices and adopt AI PCs, continuity, compatibility, security and manageability are just as essential as raw performance.

In conversation with Forbes, Meghana Patwardhan, VP of product management at AMD, shares her perspective on how leaders are approaching modernization, why minimizing disruption is crucial and how AMD PRO — an enterprise platform for commercial PCs — is designed to help organizations compete in the AI era.

The following interview has been edited for clarity and length.

The Challenges Of Transformation

Forbes: What’s the biggest misconception leaders have about modernizing an enterprise PC fleet?

Patwardhan: That it’s primarily a technology decision. While procuring the right technology is important, modernizing is a business continuity decision.

If you think about it as just a technology purchase, all you’ll consider is the spec sheet. How many cores do I need? How much frequency? What are the AI capabilities? That’s important, but the real cost isn’t only hardware … How do you protect this big fleet when something gets disrupted or goes wrong? When a team can’t access their tools or there’s a security gap? Treat fleet modernization as a change management initiative first and a technology initiative second.

Forbes: What are the biggest challenges leaders face when modernizing, specifically when it comes to operational and organizational hurdles versus technological ones?

Patwardhan: Most IT decision makers face challenges in deployment, provisioning, managing, securing and retiring equipment in a responsible way.

IT leaders managing multi-generational devices from different OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] might have mixed environments. They need to guarantee that when you give an employee a new device, no matter where they are in the world, it works exactly as expected.

That’s really where AMD PRO comes in because it supports industry-standard protocols, allowing IT to provision, troubleshoot and protect devices regardless of their operating state.

Forbes: When you speak with enterprise clients, how often is the conversation about reliability and business continuity versus device specs and system cost?

Patwardhan: Quite often. And that’s a good thing because it shows IT organizations are maturing. Until recently, buying conversations were dominated by specs and benchmarks. Those are valid criteria but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

Today, a CEO or CIO isn’t wondering whether they bought the wrong processor; instead they’re thinking about whether they’re deploying in a way that introduces security vulnerabilities, breaks compatibility with mission-critical software or creates something they can’t manage at scale across a globally distributed workforce.

They’re asking whether a platform will remain secure, compatible and manageable throughout its full lifecycle. AMD PRO is built to address those needs through platform stability supported by rigorous development and validation processes, security features built into the silicon and broad compatibility across enterprise environments.

Why Continuity And Integration Matter

Forbes: Many enterprises operate in mixed environments built over years of investment. What are IT leaders looking for in a platform that fits these environments without introducing more complexity?

Patwardhan: They’re looking for platforms that work with their current tools. No one wants to rip and replace existing architecture, workflows or OEM relationships. They want to modernize on their own terms without creating tech debt. That’s why AMD PRO is built on open industry-based standards rather than proprietary management approaches.

Forbes: When organizations evaluate a new PC platform, how important is it that the platform integrates seamlessly with existing management tools, security frameworks and deployment processes?

Patwardhan: It’s table stakes. Organizations have invested in management and security tools and they want a platform that works with those investments rather than complicating them. The message we consistently hear from IT leaders is: Keep it simple. Give me new technology but don’t do it at the risk of doubling my work.

Forbes: As organizations refresh their devices and introduce AI PCs, how are they balancing innovation with stability, security and manageability?

Patwardhan: IT leaders recognize AI PCs as a generational shift, but they’re approaching adoption thoughtfully. They’re piloting use cases and determining whether each AI workload should run locally, in the cloud or across a hybrid environment based on factors such as security, latency, governance and cost. At the same time, they’re ensuring the broader fleet remains protected and manageable.

AMD Ryzen™ AI PRO processors are built for this moment, enabling organizations to run more AI workloads locally while maintaining the enterprise management and security capabilities they rely on across their PC fleets. This gives IT leaders greater flexibility to run routine, sensitive or high-volume workloads on-device while reserving the cloud for more demanding AI tasks.

What Makes A Platform Trustworthy?

Forbes: AMD PRO is positioned as “the platform chosen by IT leaders.” What are the key attributes driving this trust?

Patwardhan: Predictability and accountability. IT leaders need to know what they deploy today will be supported, secured and compatible in their environment years from now. When an IT leader tells their board that 50,000 devices are running on AMD PRO, they’re putting their own credibility behind the platform.

Forbes: How does AMD PRO help organizations simplify fleet management while maintaining flexibility, particularly for companies that don’t want to be locked into proprietary tools?

Patwardhan: It starts with open standards. Proprietary tools might look attractive in a sales presentation, but they end up creating dependencies IT leaders pay for later.

AMD PRO is built on open industry standard protocols, working with the management tools IT has already invested in. Additionally, because it’s available across a broad range of OEM partners, IT teams aren’t tethered to a single hardware vendor. This flexibility gives organizations the ability to simplify at scale.

Forbes: Looking ahead, what platform attributes will IT leaders value most as they prepare for the next generation of work and computing?

Patwardhan: The ones that give IT leaders the capability to deliver innovation and productivity to their workforce without giving up control.

The future of enterprise computing isn’t either AI or security. It’s AI and security. Organizations need platforms that deliver AI capabilities with enterprise-grade security and seamless manageability and enable them to do it at scale. That’s the standard we’re building toward.
