Innovation is often framed as a technology challenge. But for many IT leaders, the much trickier problem is introducing new capabilities without disrupting the business. Forbes: What’s the biggest misconception leaders have about modernizing an enterprise PC fleet?

If you think about it as just a technology purchase, all you’ll consider is the spec sheet. How many cores do I need? How much frequency? What are the AI capabilities? That’s important, but the real cost isn’t only hardware … How do you protect this big fleet when something gets disrupted or goes wrong? When a team can’t access their tools or there’s a security gap? Treat fleet modernization as a change management initiative first and a technology initiative second.

Forbes: What are the biggest challenges leaders face when modernizing, specifically when it comes to operational and organizational hurdles versus technological ones?

Patwardhan: Most IT decision makers face challenges in deployment, provisioning, managing, securing and retiring equipment in a responsible way.

IT leaders managing multi-generational devices from different OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] might have mixed environments. They need to guarantee that when you give an employee a new device, no matter where they are in the world, it works exactly as expected.
