Amid the excitement of the 2026 WNBA All-Star celebrations, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the launch of a Replay Center beginning with the 2027 season, a move intended to address concerns about officiating and on-court safety raised by players, coaches and fans.
“This is one of the most significant investments we’ve ever made in our basketball operations,” said Engelbert during the All-Star pregame press conference on Saturday. “This investment of tens of millions of dollars will help bring greater consistency, efficiency, and transparency to our officiating process, while continuing to improve the quality of the game.”
Engelbert shared few details about the project but said that the WNBA will center operations alongside the NBA Replay Center in Secaucus, N.J., where officials will have access to additional camera angles and replay footage to help them make better-informed decisions.
Los Angeles Sparks forward and WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike welcomed the move, emphasizing the positive impact it can have on the relationship between players and the league.
“I think it’s good that we’re implementing more resources to better our game. You know, I know that refereeing and calls and officiating has always been a topic of discussion, and any resource that can make their jobs easier, and ultimately the relationship between players and the league and the refs, I’m all for.”
Ogwumike also reflected on how this advancement furthers the league’s development.
“I think it’s important for us to put things into perspective when we’re seeing the growth of our league, and understanding that because we haven’t had it before it may not necessarily mean that the baseline is what we need,” Ogwumike said to the media postgame. “We might have to be ahead of the curve of our own curve. So I think implementing that is going to be really helpful.”
WNBA, Players And Coaches Try To Find A Path Forward
Officiating has been a main point of contention in the WNBA. At the end of last season, Napheesa Collier put both Engelbert and the league on blast when she classified the league’s handling of officiating as “negligence.”
“Fans see it every night. Coaches, both winning and losing, point it out every night in preview and postgame media, yet leadership just issues fines and looks the other way. They ignore the issues that everyone inside the game is begging to be fixed. That is negligence,” Collier said.
During the offseason, while players focused their efforts on negotiating the new CBA, head coaches and general managers formed an officiating task force to address some of the main concerns.
“They really did the hard work of reviewing tens to hundreds of combined hours of film, and I think it’s paying off,” Engelbert told reporters, noting that offensive metrics are at all-time highs.
“That would say the freedom of movement aspect of what we did, which was important. That’s what we heard from players. We want more freedom of movement, but we got it.”
Still, stakeholders continue to raise concerns about officiating consistency, arguing that missed calls can affect player safety and game outcomes. For Engelbert, this is part of the adjustment to the new officiating expectations set by the task force.
“Now there’s always a calibration and adjustment period where fouls are being called. Players are, you know, getting up there on foul calls and things like that. But I think it’s adjusting even since over the past couple weeks,” Engelbert said, while acknowledging there’s room for improvement. “I know officiating, we always need to do better.”
As the league continues to evaluate officiating and implement new resources, WNBA leadership, players and coaches are expected to remain engaged in conversations about improving consistency on the court.
