Xiaomi launched its third car series, an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) named the Sky Nomad. EREV means an electric car that runs on an electric motor, but uses gasoline-powered engine to recharge the battery.

The Sky Nomad includes two SUVs, a 5-seater dubbed N70, and the flagship 7-seater N90. I got a close look at the N90, which measures 17.3 feet long (5.28m), 6.6-feet wide (2m), and 5.9-foot tall (1.82m). Considering how much you can do inside the car, the size seems justified.

The Sky Nomad N90 features Xiaomi’s updated “Kunlun Platform,” a flat steel and aluminum chassis with six sliding rails that allow the seats and components inside the car’s cabin to shift around.

On the N90, the platform measures 8 feet long and fits 7 seats in a 2+2+3 configuration with ample legroom. All three rows can recline 180-degree flat; the front two seats can also rotate backwards to face the third row.

If the second and third row seats are reclined completely flat, there’s enough space to fit a double bed mattress that can sleep two comfortably. The inside also features a refrigerator, a 27-inch TV for the second and third row.

The internal components shift and rotate smoothly, all controlled via touchscreen controls on the driver’s control panel. Xiaomi designers say they envision the Sky Nomad cabin as being a “living room” that can be configured. To that end, 95% of the cabin’s contact surface is made of soft material like eco-leather.

A 76 kWh battery can run the car about 300 miles on a single charge. With the 60L range extender fuel tank filled, the car can go 1,000 miles before needing another charge.

The N90 runs on a dual-motor all wheel drive system that can accelerate 0 to 100 kilometers (62 miles) in 5.9 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 118 miles (190 kilometers).

There are a pair of 4nm silicon – Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Nvidia Thor – that power the car’s assisted driving system. Pricing has not been revealed at press time, but considering Xiaomi’s history, this car will be priced very competitively in China, and make similar electric SUVs in the west look overpriced.
