You prepare for days, rehearse your answers, and make sure to look perfect for the job interview. But as soon as you enter the virtual meeting, you realize that the only human sitting across from you is your reflection on the computer screen. If your gut told you to skedaddle away from an AI job interview, then you’re not alone—and you’re not wrong.

How Common AI Interviews Actually Are

AI interviews are now the norm. It’s not a fringe experiment, and it’s certainly not something that happens occasionally. In fact, according to the Greenhouse 2026 Candidate AI Interview Report, which surveyed 2,950 active job seekers across the US, UK, Germany, Australia, and Ireland, 63%, nearly two-thirds, have actually been interviewed by AI. This number is up by 13 percentage points in just six months.

Why Candidates Are Walking From These Interviews

So why are so many people walking away? It’s not the technology, especially since many early career candidates utilize AI like second nature. But here’s what it is: it’s the secrecy, because according to the report by Greenhouse, 70% of candidates were never even told up front that AI would evaluate them. And 21% didn’t find out until they entered into the video conference room.

Before we move forward, here’s a quick reality that hits hard: 38% of candidates have walked away because the interview included AI, and another 12% said that they would do so if they came across it in the future.

According to Greenhouse, the biggest walk-away triggers were these three things:

  • 33% walked away because of pre-recorded video interviews scored by AI with absolutely no human presence.
  • 27% walked because companies did not disclose how AI would be used.
  • 26% walked out because of being monitored and surveyed by AI during the entire hiring process.

It’s no wonder that job seekers are frustrated right now. Many of them are done with this entire process. Job candidates who are more than capable of doing a job well done are walking away in droves because their first impression of companies is distrust.

Why This Is More Difficult If You’re Early In Your Career

A Gartner survey of 2,918 job candidates, conducted in early 2025, found that only 26% trust AI to evaluate them fairly during an interview. And here’s the kicker: 25% admitted that they trust an employer even less the moment that AI enters the room. A company’s desire for efficiency is killing its chances at integrity.

If you’re early in your career, AI interviews are now the normative system of choice. It’s fair to say that you may not remember a time when job interviews actually had human-to-human contact. And when you’re just starting out and your network is still thin, many times these interviews are the only place where you can showcase your skills, talent, and education. Being asked to prove yourself to AI can play havoc on your confidence and ruin your chances of getting your foot in the door.

Why Employers Ignore The Signs And Use AI Anyway

Many employers are using AI specifically during the recruiting process because they believe that it actually speeds up the process of sifting through all the candidates to find the right fit. However, speed does not always guarantee a strong prospect.

How To Know When To Walk And When To Stick It Out

Hiring is slow right now. In fact, according to Indeed Hiring Lab, entry-level job postings were down by 7.5% year-over-year as of May 2026, even though senior level roles increased by nearly 15%. The job market is favoring those who are more established and leaving early-entry level candidates in the dust. If you’re a recent grad, you might feel like you need to say yes to everything, even if it’s not the right fit for you as the employee. But don’t let desperation color your decision.

Now, you don’t have to walk away from every AI interview, but sometimes walking away is your best bet for your career. How do you know? Well, here are three questions to ask yourself when weighing the decision to stay or walk away:

  1. Ask for full disclosure. Before you even enter the video conference, send them an email and ask them if AI is going to be used and whether a human actually reviews the results. This is completely legitimate to ask, and their answer will tell you a lot about the company and its transparency.
  2. Treat the experience like practice for your next interview. Instead of getting frustrated or flustered when you find out that AI is evaluating you for the job, think of it as practice for the job that you want to go after next.
  3. Document people’s names and titles. Let’s say your AI interview went great. Instead of waiting around for your results, make sure that you reach out to the person in charge of recruitment and hiring so that they can see you shine human-to-human and get a taste for your communication style, presence, and consideration.

According to the Greenhouse report, 51% of candidates who complete an AI interview never hear a word back. Not a rejection, not feedback, not even a smoke signal—but don’t let that discourage you. Silence can still be a teachable moment, and it can show you a lot about the company.

You Still Have A Choice

Stepping out and putting your best foot forward requires an immense amount of bravery. But with an AI job interview, there’s no amount of prep work that you can do to impress a machine. A human across the table understands the nerves. They can empathize with you, and they can see beyond the surface. Which is why walking away from a broken system might be the best move for your career.
