When Gods Don’t Give Gifts opens in U.S. theaters on October 30, the most interesting question will be whether Zack London’s online audience buys tickets to follow his work into theaters.

The anthology feature, produced by Fable and directed by Zack London (better known as Gossip Goblin), extends the creator’s existing science fiction universe, the Second Cycle of Humanity, into theaters. Fable describes it as the first feature built with AI and aimed at a ticket-buying public.

Edward Saatchi, CEO of Fable, says London’s official audience across YouTube and Instagram exceeds 600 million views, rising to nearly one billion including reposts.

The film, which Saatchi calls “a low-budget indie,” is set in a science-fiction and horror-tinged future where bodies can be upgraded, memories bought and sold and consciousness transferred between forms. Its four stories follow characters using those technologies to satisfy familiar human desires, even as the distinction between body and mind begins to erode.

Production is complete, with the film now in post-production as the team adjusts its audio for theatrical release. Saatchi said in an email that theaters are already lined up

Story First, AI Tools Second

For the past two years, much of the AI film conversation has focused on image quality, workflows and production tools. London argues those discussions risk missing the point. He spent three years building an audience through hundreds of short films before attempting a feature, developing an interconnected world in which the stories share characters, settings and lore.

“I think there’s something kind of silly” about treating intellectual property as an afterthought, London says in a video interview. “AI is just a practical tool to execute on that.” The harder question, he argues, is whether audiences care about the story in the first place.

That makes the release less of a technology milestone than a distribution experiment. The test is whether internet-native intellectual property can persuade online viewers to become cinema audiences, with AI changing the economics of production rather than serving as the attraction itself.

YouTubers Move From Feeds To Theaters

London’s route follows a path other YouTube filmmakers have begun to wear in. In January, Mark Fischbach, the YouTuber known as Markiplier, took his horror film Iron Lung into theaters. Backrooms, adapted from Kane Parsons’ internet series, and Obsession followed.

Saatchi says the past few weeks alone have brought three studio bidding wars for internet-native properties, including an 11-studio contest for Siren Head. “This is the Easy Riders, Raging Bulls moment for the internet generation,” he said in the announcement.

Why Saatchi Wanted This One

Saatchi says that audience relationship is precisely why he approached London.

“I was a huge fan of Zack’s,” he says. He wanted Fable’s first theatrical release to be “a true work of art that can stand the test of time,” not a film “where the only story is that it’s really cheap.”

For Saatchi, the theatrical run is the commercial threshold the field has so far avoided.

“That’s going to be a big moment—the first Rotten Tomato score, the first box office results,” he says. “Once these things cease to be free marketing for tech companies and instead are treated as both works of art and within a marketplace—something that can break even and make money—that’s what I’ve been waiting for.”

AI Resets Every Five Weeks

That commercial framing also distinguishes London’s approach from that of AI studios promoting proprietary production pipelines. London is skeptical that such systems represent a lasting advantage.

Producing his earlier short The Patchwright took five months for 20 minutes of finished film, he says, because a wave of new models arrived during production and made earlier output obsolete.

“The whole landscape and approach resets every five weeks,” he says. On the production systems other studios promote, he is blunter: “It’s all vaporware. It’s not real, and it’s going to be antiquated by the time Seedance 2.5 comes out in a week.”

London has also deliberately kept humans in parts of the process where AI tools already exist. Gods Don’t Give Gifts uses voice actors, musicians and a Foley artist rather than relying entirely on generative systems. While AI makes the project’s visual scale possible, he says performance, sound and writing remain creative decisions he does not want to delegate.

What Success Looks Like On October 30

The rollout began Wednesday with Pomegranate, a short released on YouTube for London’s existing audience. Fable will also run a $15,000 fan-film competition set in his universe, with the winner announced on release day. Saatchi compares the strategy to A24’s early use of fan-shared content.

London says success will not simply be measured by ticket sales or critics’ scores. He hopes the film prompts conversations about its ideas rather than becoming another proxy debate about AI itself.

If it does, Gods Don’t Give Gifts will have answered a question bigger than any production technique: whether an audience that found London two minutes at a time will buy a ticket for a feature. What that answer means for the economics of filmmaking—what a studio is worth when production is cheap and the audience is the asset—is where this series goes next.
