FC Barcelona are looking into the possibility of bringing Jan Virgili home from Mallorca this summer, according to SPORT.
The winger from the same Vilassar de Mar village as Xavi Espart left Barça in the summer as part of a €3.5 million agreement for 50% of his rights.
Unlike Espart, who was scouted by La Masia for the Under-10s and then progressed to become a graduate of the famous Class of 2007 also containing the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Bernal, Virgili had to work hard to reach the top.
Playing for a series of village clubs in Maresme yet also released by Espanyol and Damm on his journey, Virgili finally progressed to the Barça B team in 2024/2025 ahead of the move to Mallorca.
Thirty four appearances that yielded three goals last term mean Virgili is seasoned in the elite, and Barça could bring him back home.
Jan Virgili’s price tag has dropped
Amid Mallorca being relegated, Virgili’s release clause dropped from €30 million to €12 million overnight.
Barça’s original transfer agreement can reduce this further to €7.2 million, and most clubs would be hard pressed to find a winger with such potential at the age of 19 for this price.
Virgili also wants to move on because he lost prominence in the starting line-up towards the end of the season. With Martin Demichelis renewing for two more years as head coach despite relegation, the Catalan is now waiting for Barça to make a move.
Operating on the left wing, Virgili could provide positional rivalry to both Raphinha and Anthony Gordon, signed before the weekend as part of an €80 million deal with Newcastle United.
He’d not be bought primarily for that position, however, as Virgili is comfortable in a number of roles across the front line including striker.
This makes him a candidate for the right wing when Lamine Yamal is injured or needs a rest. And he could also be a number 9 whether Barça manage to land Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid or not.
Deco and the board launched a €100 million bid for the Argentine on the same day Gordon was announced, and will have to up the ante to get their man alongside a potential pursuit of Jan Virgili.
