Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, is projected to have a massive second weekend haul at the domestic box office.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day made history in its opening weekend July 31-Aug. 2 with a stunning $360 million in ticket sales from 4,487 North American theaters. The tally eclipsed the previous record domestic opening that belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which earned $357.7 million from 4,662 venues from April 26-29, 2019.

As amazing as Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s opening weekend was for the Sony Pictures Entertainment release, it marked merely the beginning of what is already deemed a historic run.

By Tuesday, the film crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office and by Thursday, the film surpassed $500 million in North American ticket sales, making it the first film in history to make half a billion dollars domestically in its first week of release.

Going into this weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $510 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally for a running worldwide box office tally of $1.216 billion — and judging by early second weekend projections by Deadline, the film is poised to make a whole lot more.

On Friday afternoon, the Hollywood trade publication projected that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will make anywhere from $135 million to $140 million this weekend domestically, a tally that will now include ticket sales from IMAX venues. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened on premium large format screens, Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey had an exclusive three-week engagement on IMAX screens.

Should Deadline’s projection reach the $140 million mark, it will boost Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s domestic take to more than $650 million by Sunday.

The trade projected that Universal Pictures’ The Odyssey will finish at No. 2 for a second consecutive week with an estimated $28.5 million, which, should the number hold, will boost the film’s running take to $458.1 million. The Odyssey crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide on Thursday.

‘One Night Only’ Leads Quiet Weekend For New Releases

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey continue to pack a massive one-two punch at the box office, the traffic is considerably quieter for this weekend’s new releases.

Universal’s romantic comedy One Night Only, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, is projected by Deadline to make $6 million from 3,012 North American venues. The trade projects Toy Story 5 will earn $4.3 million from 2,660 domestic locations for a No. 4 finish —the film’s domestic take to $470.8 million — and forecasts a $4 million opening for Super Troopers 3 for the No. 5 slot.

A Searchlight Pictures release, Super Troopers 3 is opening at 2,760 North American theaters.

Also opening this weekend is director Eli Roth’s unrated horror thriller Ice Cream Man. Produced by Roth’s independent label The Horror Section, Ice Cream Man is being distributed by Iconic Releasing and playing at 1,700 domestic locations.

Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new numbers become available. The final numbers for this weekend’s box office will be released on Monday.
