Comic book fans are about to lose a longtime nerd haven.

Things From Another World — the cult-favorite comic and collectibles chain owned by Dark Horse Comics — is shutting down all of its stores after 46 years in business, including its flagship location at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles.

The brands biggest store will close its doors on Sept. 30.
Its stores in Milwaukee (pictured) and Beaverton, Ore. will close June 30.

Dark Horse Comics announced the closure in a company statement, saying the retailer’s stores in Milwaukie and Beaverton, Oregon will close June 30, while the massive Universal CityWalk location in Universal City will shutter Sept. 30.

The company did not provide a specific reason for the closure.

“This was not an easy decision, and we do not take lightly the impact it has on people affected,” Dark Horse Comics said in a statement.

The shutdown marks the end of an era for comic-book collectors and pop-culture fans who flocked to the stores for decades to hunt down rare comics, toys, collectibles and movie memorabilia.

“This was not an easy decision, and we do not take lightly the impact it has on people affected,” Dark Horse Comics said in a statement.
Dark Horse currently ranks as the nation’s fifth-largest comic publisher behind DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics and IDW Publishing.

The California flagship became a major destination for tourists and comic book fans visiting Universal Studios after opening in 1993.

The closure also comes about a year after Things From Another World quietly shut down its online site on April 30, 2025, eliminating online sales for customers.

Dark Horse said the closures are part of broader efforts to “modernize” and restructure the company under Fellowship Entertainment.

As part of the shakeup, the company announced the launch of Dark Horse Games, a new initiative focused on expanding the publisher’s franchises into interactive entertainment.

Dark Horse Comics was founded in 1986 by Mike Richardson after launching the original retail business, then known as Pegasus Books in Bend, Ore. in 1980.

According to industry tracker ICV2, Dark Horse currently ranks as the nation’s fifth-largest comic publisher behind DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics and IDW Publishing.
