Beloved California theme park Great America is heading for its final ride, with owner Six Flags confirming the fan favorite will permanently close after the 2027 season.
The Santa Clara attraction will shut down on Labor Day, Sept. 6, ending a 51-year run that saw tens of millions of visitors pass through its gates.
“For more than five decades, this Santa Clara theme park has brought people together, created family traditions and served as the backdrop for unforgettable memories,” park manager Dave Vosejpka said.
The closure has been years in the making. In June 2022, former owner Cedar Fair sold the 112-acre property to real estate developer Prologis for $310 million, securing a lease that allowed the park to continue operating through 2028.
Cedar Fair had the option to extend that lease for another five years, but the decision depended on the park’s profitability. The company ultimately opted against extending the arrangement.
Following Cedar Fair’s 2024 merger with Six Flags, the combined company reviewed its properties as it worked to address corporate debt.
Executives told investors that Great America ranked near the bottom of the company’s portfolio in profit margins, with the high cost of operating contributing to the decision not to renew the lease.
The land could prove more valuable for development than amusement rides.
Situated directly beside Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, the property has potential for data centers, advanced manufacturing or mixed-use business parks.
However, Santa Clara currently has the site zoned specifically for theme park use, meaning a zoning change would be necessary for other types of development.
Six Flags is also reporting significant financial losses. Its third-quarter earnings report, released Nov. 5, showed a net loss of $366.1 million. Losses for the first nine months of the year reached $837.3 million.
Great America first opened in 1976 as part of the nation’s Bicentennial celebration.
Its final season is scheduled to begin in March 2027, although Six Flags has not announced a specific opening date.
