September will see the launch of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max smartphones. It’s going to be a curious launch with a new foldable taking some of the spotlight while the more consumer-focused iPhone 18 is being held back until spring 2027.

Apple hopes the iPhone 18 Pro’s release triggers a “super upgrade” cycle sooner than the market typically expects, in which consumers buy a new iPhone. This would be due to the improved specifications, the less capable second-hand market, and Apple’s ability to reduce short-term price hikes.

iPhone 18 Pro Needs A Memory Upgrade For Apple Intelligence And Siri AI

Apple plans to expand the baseline memory specifications in its premium smartphone portfolio to meet the demands of localized artificial intelligence applications and force consumers to accelerate their update plans.

Key to the potential of the super cycle is AI, specifically Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features in iOS 27. These will require at least 12 GB of RAM to deliver the full experience. It’s notable that during the public beta test period of the update, the AI features are limited to specific models, and high-end features, such as expressive voices for Siri, are available only on the iPhone 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.

Apple will heavily market the new AI features; AI is seen as a necessity for smartphones in 2026. To get it, you’ll need to hit 12 GB of RAM and use the latest Apple Silicon chipsets. And that means, in the short-term, you’re going to look for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. The faithful Apple community, finally seeing a workable AI solution to rival Android, knows what to do and when to buy.

Second-Hand And Reconditioned Markets Fall Short Of iPhone 18 Pro Benefits

The demands of AI for more memory and faster processors will depress the secondary-market asset values, pushing consumers to consider newer hardware.

The 12 GB RAM requirement will devalue the second-hand and reconditioned market. Typically seen as a way to buy as-new smartphones, consumers would expect appreciable discounts on older models. While Apple’s software support for older handsets can easily stretch to seven years and beyond, that doesn’t stretch to allowing memory or storage to be replaced, let alone upgraded. The new AI features will remain beyond these handsets.

The launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iOS 27 combination is an effective line in the sand. iPhones after this point are all set for the brave new world of artificial intelligence, while those released before it will never see the same benefits. While there are always iterative processes that will leave older handsets behind, Siri AI, especially, is a cliff-face. If it succeeds and becomes an integral part of the package, the super-cycle will arrive in the second-hand market shortly thereafter.

iPhone 18 Pro Super Cycle Supported By Apple Services

Apple is enhancing its monetisation framework toward software subscriptions to leverage long-term services revenue over short-term supply chain volatility.

There’s something more basic that can support or extinguish a supercycle: the phone’s price. The smartphone market is contracting in 2026, and prices are rising across the board due to the increased cost of memory and storage driven by the rapacious demands of AI data centres. Apple is not immune to this and has already increased prices on some hardware in the middle of the individual retail cycle. The retail prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to rise, perhaps as much as $200 for the 18 Pro Max.

Apple is in a stronger position than most manufactuers to limit the price rise. It is not immune to the increased bill of materials, but it does own and control the key subscription services that many in its community use, such as Apple Music, Apple TV, iCloud Storage and more. The gross income from all of these services stays in-house.

There’s a good chance that Apple Intelligence will offer premium tiers of cloud-based services. This additional subscription could be easily bundled, boosting the total value of ownership for Apple, helping limit sticker shock and increasing the chances of triggering

Apple Has Set Up The iPhone 18 Pro Super Cycle

There’s no doubt that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will sell well during Q4, especially if consumers are coming from an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 and there’s no iPhone 18 available. The question is not how many iPhone 18 Pro models will sell, but how many Apple will sell above and beyond expectations. With the soft wall of artificial intelligence, weaker secondary-market hardware, and the flexibility to keep the initial price down, Apple is setting the table for the financial success of a super-cycle.
