Unlike Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Odyssey doesn’t seem to be the type of film that calls for a line of collectibles or toys. Matt Damon’s Odysseus is, however, is being produced as a Funko Pop! vinyl figure.
Directed by Nolan from his screenplay adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey opened in theaters worldwide on Friday, earning $124.5 million domestically and $139.5 million internationally for an opening global tally of $264 million.
On top of that, The Odyssey broke a pair of records on Rotten Tomatoes as it received the highest critics’ score and audience score of all of Nolan’s films.
In the film, Damon’s Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, is on a treacherous, 20-year path home after the Trojan War to reunite with his wife, Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), where he encounters gods, monsters and other threats, human and supernatural.
The film’s massive ensemble cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o, among several others.
‘The Odyssey’ Odysseus Pop! Figure Is Expected To Be Available In December
Naturally, any hit film results in a call for merchandise by fans, and Funko, which creates vinyl figures based on movies, TV, sports and all things pop culture, has already announced that it is producing a Pop! figure of Damon’s Odysseus. The Odyssey Funko Pop! figure of the Greek King of Ithaca is 5 inches tall — an inch taller than most Pops! — presumably because the height includes the plume (also known as the crista) on top of his helmet.
The Odysseus figure comes in a window box in case collectors choose to display the collectible. In addition to wearing Odysseus’ Greek army gear, the figure also has the character wielding his sword. The figure features Odysseus sporting his greying beard, as worn by Damon’s character, as he nears the completion of his journey home to the kingdom of Ithaca.
While Funko’s retail site lists The Odyssey Odysseus figure as “coming soon” and presents consumers with an option to receive a notification when it is available to order, collectible retail sites including Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store already have the vinyl figure up for pre-order for $14.99. According to Entertainment Earth, the Odysseus figure is expected to be available in December. Like other Funko Pops! the Odysseus figure is expected to be available through major online retailers as well as in stores.
