Thoroughbred racing and Saratoga, New York have been in the same sentence since 1863. Opening weekend this year happened to coincide with the 250th birthday of the United States. Celebrating the sport and Independence Day with equal enthusiasm, the Saratoga race meet got off to a wonderful start as one of the game’s most iconic ovals welcomed fans and kicked off what should be an exciting summer in the sport of Thoroughbred racing.

Why Saratoga Is One Of THE Places To Be In Horse Racing

Age is the biggest reason Saratoga Race Course is targeted by the top talent in the sport. As the oldest organized sporting venue in the country, the facilities are steeped in tradition as it plays host to the Travers each year, which is the oldest Stakes race for three-year-olds in the United States. For decades, the top players in the sport have descended on this town in upstate New York known for its mineral springs and top-notch horse racing. The 2026 meet, which runs through Labor Day, will feature a total of 73 Stakes races worth $23.5 million. Included in that lineup of marquee events are stallion making races like the Jim Dandy, Whitney, Jockey Club Gold Cup, and Travers along with top races for the girls in the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes. The turf racing is also high in quality as the New York grass plays host to the Fourstardave, Troy, and Christophe Clement Stakes to name just a few.

Competition Has Made Saratoga The Graveyard Of Champions

Saratoga has several nicknames, but perhaps the most descriptive is “Graveyard of Champions”. What this means is many of the top performers in the sport have tasted defeat when competing here. In fact, the term “upset” was coined at Saratoga when an unexpected outcome occurs as in the 1919 Sanford Stakes the mighty Man O’ War suffered his only career defeat when he was beaten by a horse named…Upset.

The biggest factor leading to unexpected results at Saratoga is the high level of competition. Normally large fields decorate the racing cards as winning any race at this historic track looks good on a horse’s resume’. That means owners and trainers are eager to enter and take a shot. The timing of the meet also can be part of the reasoning. As is the case with all athletes there are peaks and valleys. Some of these runners are running in peak form in the spring and some are just hitting stride in the summer. Because the competition is always top notch, if horsemen hope to be successful at Saratoga, they better bring their A game.

During the opening three days of racing, July 3,4,and 5, eight Stakes races were contested. True to historic form, in those eight races, the post-time favorite was victorious three times with one of those being a dead heat in the Kelso Stakes between favored Zulu Kingdom and 8 to 1 shot Mi Bago. By all rights, that means there was an “upset” in 75% of the Stakes races.

The live racing meet at Saratoga will conclude on September 7 with a special Labor Day card.
