There are two non-negotiables in the world of consumer cybersecurity: use a password manager and apply security updates. But what if your chosen password manager stops providing those updates? That’s the warning that users of the 1Password for Safari app have been given in an April 25 email. “The minimum browser version required to support 1Password for Safari is expected to change to Safari 18.6 on May 24, 2026,” the email, which I received myself, stated. Although you will still be able to use the 1Password app after this date without updating your browser, “app updates will be unavailable until the browser is updated to Safari 18.6 or later,” the email concluded.

Don’t Delay — 1Password Users Recommended To Update Safari Browser Now

There are many reasons why you need a password manager, from mitigating password reuse attacks by maintaining unique, strong passwords for every account to just making the login process easier. Despite occasional reports of security incidents, such as the recent Bitwarden compromise or the 2022 LastPass breach, the securely encrypted password vaults we rely on have yet to be directly cracked. The simple truth of the matter is that the vast majority of consumers will be far safer using a password manager to secure their accounts than relying upon other methods. One of the market leaders in this sector is 1Password, so when I received an email from the 1Password team with a subject line of “Action recommended: Update to Safari 18.6 or higher to access 1Password updates,” my has a compromise occurred hackles were immediately raised. Thankfully, this was not the case; rather, the email was an advisory stating that the minimum Safari version required to support 1Password is moving to 18.6 to allow the company to “continue delivering the latest security improvements and platform features available on Safari.”

Users are therefore urged to update their Apple browsers to this version or later ahead of the change in late May. Failure to do so will prevent continued access to ongoing 1Password updates, and that, dear reader, could be seriously bad news. As I said at the start of this article, applying security updates is a cybersecurity essential that applies equally to applications as to operating systems. While the warning email states that “browsers that don’t meet the minimum version by the deprecation date can continue using 1Password for Safari,” there will be no further app updates until the browser is updated. Don’t delay, folks. If you use 1Password for Safari, ensure your browser is updated now.
